Scottish Double Case

This case lay is that in use by Glasgow School of Art in 2005. It follows the lay that was in use at Bell and Bain in the late 1950s. The case is the improved style, with larger boxes in the upper case section, for the capital letters. In this version there are six rows (the diagram may be slightly distorted, but the top two rows are one size, the bottom four rows are a larger size). Note that one of the upper case rows is used to put the f ligatures in a logical order. The --- box is em dash, and -- is en dash. In the lower case section, note that q is kept adjacent to u, and the spacing is shown as 1/5 for thins, 1/4 for mids and 1/3 for thicks. Glasgow School of Art has an alternative Double Case configuration, with only five rows in the upper case section.

There are several versions of Scottish Double cases, from the Ordinary with nine rows of upper, and the Ordinary with seven rows, to the Improved with five rows, two being small, and the Improved with five rows, only one being small, and the Improved with six rows, as shown above.
