This Spanish typecase lay is shown in Enciclopedia Vniversal Illvstrada (1928), and Fábregues y Saavedra: Manual del Cajista de Imprenta (1933). It is also shown in Lockwood: American Dictionary of Printing and Bookbinding (1894) as the most common Spanish lay. The Caja Reformada lay is similar, but has capitals in a different row order, and has one less small box in the bottom left corner, with y q l in different boxes. Note the position of, for example, J U K W in the upper case and h i in the lower case, compared with English lays.

The box with ¦ represents a single dagger. The o a are superiors. The # box is letra rota, ie the hell box. The spacing boxes are for espacios gordos, finos, cuadrats, etc. and m.l is for med lineas. The Spanish Single shows a slightly different box width for e i and gordos (thicks). The empty case is Caja Normal.
