This English typecase configuration is shown in Southward: Practical Printing (1st ed 1882, 3rd ed 1887 and 4th ed 1892) as being the lay for the types of Shanks & Co Patent Type Foundry. There is a companion Lower case. In his Modern Printing (1st ed 1898, and still in 8th ed 1954), Southward shows a different case and lay, for Miller & Richard's Gem music type, eg using a Gem Lower and for the Upper, a Triple case. He also shows a different, empty, Lower and Upper case, which he considered more useful for the differing sizes of founts supplied by the various founders.
