This English typecase configuration is shown in Southward: Practical Printing (1st ed 1882 and still in 4th ed 1892) as being the lay for the music types of Shanks & Co Patent Type Foundry. There is a companion Upper case. In his Modern Printing (1st ed 1898, and still in 8th ed 1954), Southward shows a different case and lay, this time for Miller & Richard's Gem music type, eg Gem Lower. He also shows a different, empty, Lower and Upper case, which he considered more useful for the differing sizes of founts supplied by the various founders.
