This typecase lay is shown in De Vinne: The Practice of Typography - Modern Methods of Book Composition (1904 and 1914) as a useful case to use when setting tables of figures. It is similar to the case shown by Southward: Modern Printing (2nd ed 1904) as being the figure or table setting case manufactured at the Caslon Foundry, and invented by T.W.Smith, although De Vinne has two less boxes in the fourth row from the top. De Vinne remarks that there is not a standard figure case for algebraic work, there being too many sizes and signs, and the lay being personal to the job in hand. But it was useful to have a quarter case for the signs, usually alongside the italic cases most in use for the work, with the signs laid in the same order for each size.

In the lay shown, the box with ¦ is for a single dagger, and next to it is a double dagger. The boxes with « «» » are for a three-part brace. The boxes with inferior figures should show a line above each figure, since these are the denominators of fractions.

The case's empty configuration is De Vinne Figure.
