This English case is shown by Jacobi: Printing (5th ed 1913 and 6th ed 1919), and Caslon & Co: Printing Types and Catalogue of Materials (1925). The equivalent Upper case is Improved Upper. The design of the case is intended to bring letters in constant use to the right hand side, with letters grouped for greater economy, and all spacing brought to the front of the case, to reduce the distance travelled by the compositor's hand. The lay is Caslon New Lower.
