Empty Cassa Tipografica

This Italian case configuration matches that in Enciclopedia Italiana (1949). This is a single case, but an earlier edition of the Enciclopedia (1937) labels a Cassa Alta and a Cassa Bassa, and these may have been separate cases. Lockwood in 1894 showed two separate cases, fairly similar to these, but Hostettler in 1963 shows a single case, albeit with a very different configuration.

The actual type lay is Cassa Tipografica. There is (in February 1999) an almost identical case on view in a Venetian shop window, though used for storing beads rather than type! That case has an extra division in the spazi forti box, and is the same as Gallavrini's Romano case (of 1966).
