This Italian typecase configuration matches that in Enciclopedia Italiana (1937). The companion Upper Case is Cassa Alta. It is not clear from the encyclopedia whether these two cases existed at that time as two separate cases, or as one combined case. Pozzoli in 1882, and Lockwood in 1894, showed two separate cases, fairly similar to these, but a later edition of the Enciclopedia in 1949 shows a Single case, as does Hostettler in 1963, albeit with a very different configuration.

The actual type lay is Cassa Bassa.
