This U.S. typecase lay is shown in American Type Founders, Pacific Coast Blue Book - Specimens of Type, Printing Machinery, Printing Material, 1896. The empty case is Two Third Space & Quad.

The lay shows quads, em and en spaces, spaces (being 3 to em (thick) spaces), 5 em spaces and 4 em spaces, and also includes hair spaces, unlike the full-size Space & Quad case. ATF's text states that "the case has larger boxes than those in the full-size pattern, and an extra box for hair spaces - a very important feature in the larger sizes of type".
