This English lay is one used in the Faculty of Printing at the Southern College of Art circa 1970. The lay is very similar to Heffer and Camberwell and Jarrold and Reading and Curwen, etc., with the numerals in the top rows of the right hand (upper case) bay. However, the Southern College make provision for the ct st and Qu ligatures. Also, Reading omit the ae oe ligatures and have p and k in different boxes, Curwen have ems and Ł in different boxes and include daggers, Heffer put thins where SCA put mids, Camberwell put ; in a different box and split mids into mids and thins, and Jarrold put thins and hairs where SCA have ct and st, and ' where SCA have thins (and Camberwell, Curwen and Heffer have hairs). SCA make no provision for hair spaces.

The — box is for em rule and – is for en rule. The actual typecase construction matches, for example, that of the Caslon 1897, Stephenson Blake 1922, Harrild 1970 etc. Improved Double Case, distinguished by the six rows of boxes in the right hand (upper case) bay, with the two top rows being smaller than the rows below.

Central St Martins (University of the Arts, London) used an identical lay, omitting the ct, st, Qu, QU and en rule, but based on the Ordinary Double case, and thus having an extra row of empty boxes in the upper case section.
