This English case configuration is shown in Whetton; Practical Printing & Binding (1946 and 3rd ed 1965). It follows the style of Southward in 1887, except that the bottom row, as well as the top row, in the upper case bay is a small one. It is contemporary with the equivalent California Job case that was available in the U.K. (and is shown by Whetton in use) although the California case has 54 lower case boxes, rather than the 53 of English cases, and is a slightly different overall size. A suitable lay for the Improved Double might be Southward's.
