This type lay is given by Southward: Practical Printing, 5th edition 1900, edited by Powell. Being a jobbing case, ie for work other than books and newspapers, it does not require small caps, accents, etc. and so the improvement reduces the number, and increases the size, of the boxes. The case is not shown in earlier editions of Practical Printing, nor in Southward's subsequent Modern Printing. The empty case, matching the Caslon case shown by Southward, is Improved Jobbing Upper.
