The layout was used by Heffer & Sons of Cambridge, and was probably still in use in the 1970s. It is very similar to Southward in Modern Printing (1904 2nd edition, 1933 6th edition, 1954 8th edition) as in use in bookwork offices. However, those layouts still have k in the Upper case. Other differences are that Heffer puts two-dot leaders in the em box, mids where Southward has two-dot leaders, and only thins where Southward has mid and thin combined.

The empty configuration is that of Johnson (1824), and eg Southward (1882), Miller & Richard (1897), Stephenson Blake & Co (1922), American Printing Equipment & Supply Co. (1987) etc. The companion Upper is Heffer's lay.
