This English layout is the No.3 lay of Smith: The Printer's Grammar (1755) reprinted by Gregg (1965), and is also shown by Legros & Grant: Typographical Printing-Surfaces (1916). It differs from Smith No.1 in having the numerals in a different row, altering the position of J and U and including hair spaces. It differs from Smith No.2 only by having the numerals, hair space and some ligatures and references in a different row and swapping J and U and putting ç in the Lower case and [ ] in the Upper. The capitals remain top left, and numerals bottom left, as in Moxon (1683), but the small caps at top right replace the accents of Moxon, and the accents move down to replace Moxon's signs. The companion Lower case is Smith No.3.

Note that the boxes with A,B, etc are small caps. The ¦ box represents a single dagger, and ¦¦ a double dagger. The |b box represents the long s with b ligature, etc.

The empty case configuration is that of Moxon, and Luckombe (1771), Stower (1808), Johnson (1824), Miller & Richard (1873), Southward (1882), Mackellar (1885), Barnhart Bros & Spindler's News (1890s), Stephenson Blake & Co (1922), Caslon (1925) etc.
