This English typecase configuration matches that used by Mr Hazard of Bath, given in Stower: The Printer's Grammar (1808), reprinted Gregg (1965). The New Lay proposed by Johnson: Typographia (1824) is almost the same, apart from Johnson adding two small boxes above the e box, and having the : ; etc boxes in a different (and the more normal) position. Hazard has divided the normal t box into three, for the various spacing, with a change of another box therefore to accommodate v. The configuration is almost the same as MacKellar: The American Printer (1870 to 1889), except that MacKellar has one extra divided box, and v in a different position.

Hazard's type lay is Lower Case.
