This typecase construction matches the Old Greek Lower shown by Savage: A Dictionary of the Art of Printing (1841), being the one used by Spottiswoode. It has 51 boxes. It is very close to Johnson's Greek Lower of 1824, except that Johnson divided one of the tau boxes horizontally (for spacing). Savage also shows a New Greek Lower, which replaces the divided gamma chi zeta kappa and theta boxes with single larger boxes. The New pattern is then almost followed by MacKellar's Greek Lower of 1870, except that MacKellar does not have the box for thins above the epsilon box, and does not divide the tau box at all, whereas Savage has the two narrow boxes, for the two versions of the tau character. In 1882, Southward also showed only the one large tau box, but did then divide the rho box.

The companion Upper is the Greek Upper of Stower et al. and the actual type lay is Greek .
