This U.S. lay is of a Hamilton case shown by American Type Founders, American Type Line Book (1906). However, another (Boston) edition of the same book, and also Barnhart Bros & Spindler, Book of Type Specimens No.9 (1907) and Hamilton's Catalog 14) (c.1907) show it without the ([ box (which are thus not included in the case). The empty case configuration is Paterson Job (118 boxes) or Paterson Job (117 boxes).

The case is capable of holding small caps, because the upper bay has 9 rows of 7 boxes, unlike most other Job cases, for example, the Italic has 7 rows of cap boxes, the California has 5 rows. The New York job case has only 5 rows, but does also have 2 additional cap rows in the lower case bay, so it too can hold small caps.
