This typecase configuration matches both the Outer and Upper Cases of V & J Figgins, Layout Sheets (nd but pre 1907), in St Bride Printing Library in 1997.

This style of case was used for Arabic (needing two to four of these), Persian (needing only two, i.e. an Outer and an Upper), Malayan (needing two, i.e. an Outer and Upper), and Hindustani (as the Upper, with the Outer using a standard Upper case). For all these types, a standard Lower case was also required, apart from Malayan which had a different design of Lower case.
