The layout is that given in Caslon: Printing Types & Catalogue of Materials (1925) as designed to give greater accommodation for body caps. This is achieved by increasing the box widths in the right hand bay, although the same lay shown by Jacobi in his Printing (5th edition 1913) shows all the boxes the same size. Caslon moves the figures into the Lower case, to be closer to the compositor's hand, and consequently some of the less-used lower case characters, such as q, are moved into the Upper case. The companion Lower is Caslon New Lower.

The boxes with A, etc are small caps. The box ¦ is really a single and ¦¦ a double dagger. The box «» is really top, middle and bottom 3 piece brace. The { is a 2em brace, { a 3em and { a 4em brace. Similarly -- is a 2em dash, --- a 3em and ---- a 4em dash (rule).

Note that the typecase is partitioned into two unequal bays, small caps, etc., being in the smaller left-hand bay. The empty case configuration is the Improved Upper. The overall number of boxes is the same as in the normal Upper of Moxon, etc.
