This U.S. configuration matches that of Barnhardt Brothers & Spindler: Pony Specimen (1890s), and is described as one of the most convenient cases in use, holding 6 fonts of combination border plus spaces and quads. It is also shown by American Type Founders (Central): Blue Book (1895). There is a later version shown by Hamilton in 1922, with one extra row of boxes.
