Dutch Mongolian Single Case

Mongolian Case
This Dutch case is as drawn by Jo De Baerdemaeker, as part of his post doctoral research into Mongolian typefaces (see for example typojo). The case originally came from E.J.Brill in Leiden, and was in use from at least 1931, and is currently (2026) in the posession of Jo De Baerdemaeker, who was given it by Jan Keijser of the Avalon Pers in 2018, along with the 20pt (Dutch height) type.

The actual configuration of the case is Dutch Mongolian being almost the same as the normal Dutch Letterkast of the Avalon Pers, shown in Hostettler's Technical Terms of the Printing Industry (1949) as used by Joh. Enschedé en Zonen. The two differences in the cases are the Brill case having two extra small boxes on the lower right hand side.but the top right hand section having four rows of only twelve boxes, rather than fourteen boxes, and thus only 116 boxes in total, rather than 128 in the Enschedé case.
