Set Widths of UK Monotype Composition Type Faces


The list is in type face series number order and shows faces listed in the "Monotype" Book of Information published by The Monotype Corporation, London in 1950 and 1964, supplemented by information in their "Monotype" Specimen Book c.1937, Specimen Book of "Monotype" Printing Types c.1973, and Specimen Book of "Monotype" Non-Latin Faces c.1977. The most recent name of the type face is shown, but some faces were re-named by Monotype over the years, or were sometimes shown in a different order, for example Plate Gothic was sometimes called Gothic Plate, and eventually became re-named as Spartan (see Monotype Metal Type Faces for a list showing all the alternative names). Beware that the names and series numbers used by the Monotype Corporation/Monotype International in the U.K. differ from those used by Lanston Monotype in the U.S.A. and therefore the name shown below as Caslon, for example, may not be the same design as the similarly named U.S. face. Note also that 14pt bodies with set widths marked * denote matrices marked 13½ but to be cast on 14pt, although a few matrices marked 13½ have their set widths shown on the line below the main entry, as there is also a 14pt matrix. Matrices marked in Didot sizes are shown as 6D, for example, on the line below the main entry, with the set width shown either as the actual point body entry, or under it if a normal point body also exists with a different set width. Matrices marked LF or SF (large or small face), SD or LAD (short descenders or long ascenders and descenders), and 9½, 10½ or 11½ are similarly identified on the line below the main entry. Note that in the earlier years, 6½pt and 7½pt moulds did not exist, and matrices were cast on 7pt and 8pt. Nowadays, they can be cast on the correct moulds.
