This English typecase configuration is shown in Harrild: Illustrated Catalogue of Printing Lithographic & Binding Machinery & Materials (1889) and in Southward: Modern Printing (1st ed. 1898, and still in 8th ed. 1954), as being a useful case to suit the differing sizes of founts supplied by the various founders. There is a companion Music Lower. Although Southward shows these two empty cases, the actual music type lays that he gives are for a very different syle of case, with the Upper as a Treble case, and the Lower as an adapted Treble case configuration, as used for Miller & Richard's Gem music type.
