Monotype Figures and their related series

Monotype's figures are numbered in the range F1 to F9999. Their Specimen Book of 'Monotype' Rules Borders Figures etc shows specimens of each figure, be it roman numeral, italic numeral, fraction, split fraction, superior or inferior numeral. The pages are divided between those figures that are related to a type series, and shown in type series order, and those figures that are unrelated to any specific series. Those pages also include figures related to type series but do not identify the series. The table below rectifies this, by showing all the figure serials, and then any related type series and the point sizes available.

The informastion has been taken from the Specimen Book sheets which were dated 1960 for the 6pt sheets, 1966 for 7pt, 1959 for 8pt, 1964 for 9pt, 1958 for 10pt, 1962 for 11pt and 1963 for 12pt. A few figures in the possesion of the Alembic Press are not listed in the Specimen Book sheets, and these have been shown in bold below. In the style column below, Fig includes dotted, underlined, cameo, etc figures. Italic figures are shown as Fig, and superior and inferior figures as Sup and Inf. Cancelled figures are shown as Can Fig, and horizontal and reversed figures as Hoz Fig and Rev Fig. 2ln Fig are 2 line Figures, and 3ln are 3 line. Normal fractions are shown as Frac, and split fractions as Split Frac, and italic fractions as Frac.

A final check of the entries below has still to be done. But note that there are gaps in the numerical sequence, being where serials have not been shown on the Specimen Book sheets. Also on the 7pt Figures p.6 sheet, series 94 should be 694, and on the Special Figures p.5 F1234 and F1235 should be F1334 and F1335 (and are related to the 215 fount). The set widths of figures is usually 9 unit, but the Specimen Book sheets should be consulted, since many figures have a different set width.
