This case lay is that in use in the Glasgow School of Art in 2005. The lay follows one used at Bell and Bain in the late 1950s. Spacing is shown as 1/3 for thick, 1/4 for mid and 1/5 for thin. The Æ shares a box with æ and OE with oe. The case is improved in that it is constructed with five rows for the upper case section, four rows being larger than the fifth (top) row, allowing more room for the capital letters. The School has an alternative Double with six upper case rows.

A different version of this improvement is Scottish Double, where it is the bottom row that is the small one, and the Scotch Improved Double Jobbing Case illustrated by Stephenson, Blake & Co.: Printing Material & Machinery (1922), and Caslon: Printing Materials (1925), which has top and bottom rows as small. A further version has six rows, and the ordinary Scottish double case has nine or seven rows of boxes in the upper case section.
