This Scottish typecase is one borrowed from 50 Hurst Street, Oxford in 2025 and is an Improved Double case, which unfortunately has no manufacturer or supplier's name on it. The layout is a temporary one created by the Alembic Press for Monotype sorts. It does not have U, J, w, g, y and ligatures etc., in the traditional boxes, and also puts 4 unit spaces where thick spaces normally go, Monotype's default word spacing being 4 units. The other Monotype spacing of 3 to 10 units is stored in a separate box. The ? and ! did not feature in the job for which the sorts weere needed, so are not in the layout. The box shown 123 also has 4-0, the one shown ABC has D to Z, the one shown ½ also has other fractions and the one shown & also has $. The empty boxes are used for pied or unexpected type.

The empty configuration is Scottish Improved Double. The 'Improvement' is in the five rows of boxes in the upper case (right hand) bay, whereas the traditional case had seven rows. Fewer rows allows the bottom four rows to have larger boxes, thus giving more room for the capitals.
