This U.S. lay is shown in Barnhart Bros & Spindler Pony Specimen 1893, and American Type Founders (Central Type Foundry) Blue Book 1895, and Southward Practical Printing 1882 and 2nd ed. 1884, and is the News Lower of Cleveland Type Foundry Catalogue and Price List of Type and Material 1893. It is almost the same as the Lower of De Vinne (1904) and ATF (1906), except that BBS have fl in the BBS Upper Case, and instead have hair spaces in the Lower. Similarly, MacKellar: The American Printer 2nd ed 1866, Harpel: Typograph or Book of Specimens 1870 and Southward (1887) have fl and not hair spaces in the Lower, but also reverse the order of w and ,. The sequence , w is the English pattern, eg from Luckombe (1771) to Tarr (1945), whereas w , became adopted by the later U.S. lays.
