This U.S. type lay is shown by American Type Founders American Line Type Book (1906), and Barnhardt Bros & Spindler: Book of Type Specimens No.9 (1907) and the Hamilton Manufacturing Company Modern Cabinets, Furniture and Materials for Printers, Catalog 14 (c.1907) as a Two Third Yankee case, but also shown as the Improved Type Case by Sigwalt Manufacturing Co Printing Presses, Type and Supplies, Catalogue No.10 (c.1910). It is again shown as a Yankee Two Third Case (model 2855) by Hamilton Manufacturing Co Modern Printing Office Furniture Catalog 15 (1922) and Catalog 16 (c.1932) and American Type Founders Catalogue (1923), although a full-size Yankee case has eight boxes either side in the upper case section, and not the seven shown here. The Gujarati Type Foundry Type Book (1928) calls it an Italic Two Third case, and Polk The Practice of Printing (rev ed 1964) simply calls it a Two Third. However, it is called a California by Missouri-Central Type Foundry Price List (1959).

Note that the ffl box also holds fl. The empty case configuration is Two Third Yankee. A full size case is Yankee Job or California Job. For some other variations in names of Two Third Yankee cases, see for example the California of Hamilton, the New York of Long, and the Yankee that is a straight copy of the full-size case.
