This empty Italian case corresponds to the layout of Pozzoli: Nuovo Manuale di Tipografia (1882) in Gaskell: The Lay of the Case, in Bowers: Studies in Bibliography Vol. 22 (1969). The lay of the characters is Pozzoli and the empty companion lower case is Italian Lower.

A somewhat similar configuration is shown by Lockwood in 1894, but with fewer divided boxes.
