This U.S. lay is that shown in American Type Founders Co, American Line Type Book (1906) and Specimen (1923) and in Barnhardt Bros & Spindler, Book of Type Specimens No.9 (1907) and Hamilton Manufacturing Company, Modern Cabinets, Furniture and Materials for Printers, Catalog 14 (c.1907) as the New York Improved Job Case. Long, Wood Type & Printing Collectibles (1980) also shows it as an old Hamilton Industries lay, called New York Job. It is almost the same as the Improved New York Job Case of Hamilton (1932), Thompson (1949) etc. but those have the three centre cap rows larger. This earlier version has four large cap rows. If the two rows of small caps are omitted, the lay is the same as Hamilton's California Job lay. The unimproved case has seven rows of equal sized cap boxes.

The two-thirds version omits the right hand bay. The empty case configuration is New York Job case.
