Empty Four Fount Case

This English typecase configuration matches the Four Fount Case in Miller & Richard's Price List (1873) reprinted by Bloomfield (1974), and their Specimens of Book Newspaper Jobbing and Ornamental Types (1894), Catalogue and Price List of Printing Material (1897), Printing Machinery & Material (1910), Specimens of Modern, Old Style and Ornamental Types cast on Point Bodies (1912) and Printing Type Specimens (1927). It is also shown by Harrild: Illustrated Catalogue of Printing Lithographic & Binding Machinery & Materials (1889) and Caslon: Specimen of Printing Types (1897). It has four bays of 28 boxes, unlike the Southward and later Caslon version which has four bays of 49 boxes, and unlike the Hamilton version, where three of the rows have larger boxes than the others.

Southward described the case as being particularly suitable for storing capital or fancy letter founts.
