This English layout is that of Oldfield: A Practical Manual of Typography, 1st edition (1892) and repeated in the 2nd edition (1898). A very similar lay is later shown by Southward (1898 and still in 8th ed 1954), and Tarr (1945), as the modern lay, with only the fractions in a different order, and the crown replaced by 1/6. However, an earlier Improved lay by Southward in 1884 is different, with the X to J row in a different place, more boxes for accents, and also including numerals. Putting the figures in the Lower case was first shown by Hazard in Stower, 1808, but most modern lays keep them in the Upper (e.g. Wallis (1959).

Note that all the boxes should be the same size. The boxes with A, etc are small caps. The box for à also contains á, â, ä. The box |¦ is really single and double dagger. The box «» is really top, middle and bottom 3 piece brace. The ---- are sizes of em dash.

The companion lower case is Oldfield and the empty configuration is the normal Upper of Moxon (1683), Smith (1755), Stower (1808), Johnson (1824), Miller & Richard (1873), Southward (1882), Mackellar (1885), Barnhart Bros & Spindler's News (1890s), Stephenson Blake & Co (1922), Caslon (1925) etc.
