This English lay is shown by Jacobi: Printing (5th edition 1913 and 6th ed 1919) as Caslon's new registered lay and is also shown by Caslon & Co: Printing Types and Catalogue of Materials (1925). The equivalent Upper is Caslon New Upper. The design of the case brings letters in constant use to the right hand side, with letters grouped for greater economy, and all spacing brought to the front of the case, to reduce the distance travelled by the compositor's hand. It is said to be very useful for tabular work, as the figures are in a much more accessable position (and removed from the Upper case). The less used lower case characters, such as q, are moved to the Upper case. The empty case configuration is New Lower.
